DIY Jerk-Stop
Video also on Youtube here… https://youtu.be/L3ahDEqpCU4
So if you shoot tethered during your sessions, you’re probably aware that there is a risk you could pull on the cable and break the port on your camera… and thats one expensive repair.
I know a guy at my local camera club who set his camera up for a demo (using the cable to give a live preview), when he tripped on the cable and in that split second broke the port on his camera. As he only used the port for showing things at camera club he decided not to repair his camera and live with the broken port.
There is a device that stops the cable being pulled in the wrong direction and prevents damage to the post on your camera.
Its the Jerkstopper* by Tethertools*
However at $16.95 I think its and expensive “clip” for your camera (although not as expensive as repairing your usb port on your camera of course).
SO I decided to make my own, i figured the Jerkstopper* is a simple deivce and by using a couple of cable ties and a lanyard clip I created my own for about 20cents
You will need…
- 3 Cable Ties
- A Lanyard clip, (mine had a 2 part clip and is ideal, link below)
- and of course your USB Cable
(Tethertools sell a high visibility orange cable, so you can see it easily… which is considerably more expensive than normal usb cables. I bought a reflective silver cable for just a few dollars and if I want I can use my bright red gaffa tape and put little red flashes on it)

(this link is for 10 lanyards for 99p, which is less than 10p each)
